The solution to homelessness is not just a roof

The solution to homelessness is not just a roof

Thanks to 5Cities Homeless Coalition’s intensive case management, more than 90% of families we help house remain housed at least one year later. Case management is a top priority, empowering our clients to take control of their finances and overcome barriers through programs such as Rapid Re-Housing, Eviction Prevention, Immediate Needs, Homeless Youth Outreach and Mentoring, Supportive Services for Veteran Families, Medical Respite and Benefits Advocacy.

Providing these services relies on the generosity of individuals and businesses. Without the assistance of community-minded donors, we would not be able to serve our neighbors most in need.

Current challenges include:

  • There is no permanent, secure location in South County to provide services to families, seniors, adults, children and youth who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. We are working to address this problem right now.
  • There is a housing shortage, particularly affordable housing for low-income families, throughout San Luis Obispo County and especially in the Five Cities area. We are working with landlords, government agencies and other nonprofit organizations right now to identify solutions.

Activities such as securing a permanent, accessible location, overcoming the difficulties of the housing shortage, and finding the funds for application fees, security deposits, first months’ rents, move-in costs and other direct assistance – all these activities are vital to the success of our programs and services.

Our fundraising efforts have strengthened South County communities from Avila Beach to Nipomo for more than a decade by mobilizing resources, fostering hope, and working tirelessly to get families into housing with the skills necessary for them to remain housed.

5Cities Homeless Coalition has set a fundraising goal of $150,000 this year, right now, to be able to continue this work. As we start a new decade of service, we hope you will join us!
